A few books we’re excited about this January:

Becoming a Ballerina: The Story of Michaela Mabinty Deprince, by Laura Obuobi and Olivia Duchess. This is an absolutely beautiful children’s picture book profiling a ballerina who broke barriers as a dancer of color. Important subject, simply told and gorgeously illustrated.

Victorian Psycho, by Virginia Feito. Deeply weird and extremely funny, this is the Indie Next February Pick. Imagine Wednesday Adams as a governess in Victorian England, redrawing the original gothic suspense tale as she proceeds through the halls of Ensor’s House.

Water Moon, by Samantha Sotto Yambao. We’re often told not to judge books by their covers. What you soon discover in bookselling is that everyone does anyway. In this case, Water Moon is every bit as lovely as its cover. The plot is set in a somewhat-mythical Tokyo, where a young woman inherits a pawn shop that accepts regrets. There’s also a magical quest involved and it’s all very charming without being cloying.

The Mad Book Club

We meet the last Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm at Parlour Wines. All readers are welcome -- you don't need to sign up in advance. We try to have multiple copies of the book club’s monthly pick available in the store beforehand. For the first half of 2025, we will be doing a literary wander through the U.S. Southwest. Our SW-themed books and meeting times are below:

January 30: Animal Dreams, Barbara Kingsolver

February 27: Death Comes for the Archbishop, Willa Cather

March 27: The Missing Morningstar and Other Stories, Stacie Denetsosie

April 24: Shutter, Ramona Emerson

May 29: Bless Me, Ultima, Rudolfo Anaya

June 26: A Walk in the Park, Kevin Fedarko
